the Fortuna-adit

The "Fortuna Fundgrube" in Deutschkatharinenberg was founded in 1620 by the steward of the 'Saigerhütte' Grünthal to mine the needed copper. But 1632 the equipment was destroyed by the imperial troops under General Holk zerstört. The miners came fromm the nearby Bohemian town St. Katharinaberg (Hora Svate Kateriny), where the could not live because they were Protestants. The mining and the delivering to the Saigerhütte in Grünthal caused the foundation of the village 'Deutschneudorf' with 2 melting furnaces.
The mining area was operated with several breaks and several mining societies until the middle of the 19th century. At this time there was no important vein of ore found anymore.
The centre of the mining area was the "Fortuna Erbstollen" on the adit Fortuna. This vein of ore crossed the national border and ended in the Bohemian adit "Nikolai Stollen". Until 1945 in the Fortuna adit was a Visitors Mining adit exists. Now it will be renewed.
A speciality of our adit is the 10meters high water wheel whithin inthe adit. We found also a lot of intersting mining signs.
In the last days of the World War II a transport company of the SS was here. In this connection we have relevant circumstances, that the well-known amber room is situated here.
The company 'Fortunastollen Ltd' with the CEO H.-P. Haustein managed the renewabling of the Fortuna adit since 18 mounths. The Visitors Mining adit will open at October 2001.
